"When you say that you see the spirits, are you literally seeing them standing next to us?" a young woman asked at a recent event. I'm asked this question often and it is usually in response to a message that has just been given. At this particular event, a young man in spirit who was with a young woman in the audience appeared with blond hair, cut short, and standing straight up on his head, which I had described accurately.
The short answer to whether I see spirits is "yes." However, there is a longer answer and explanation, which I hope will help everyone to understand the process of spirit communication (at least as it works for me).
When a medium sees spirits, she or he is using clairvoyance, a term derived from French meaning "clear vision." Students who attend my development workshops learn to work with the chakra (energy center) associated with clairvoyance in order to increase their clarity of vision. With exercises and practice, we can all enhance our natural abilities to "see."
There are two types of clairvoyance, objective and subjective. With objective clairvoyance, the medium is actually seeing spirit entities with the physical eye. In these cases the spirits appear in their entirety or partially. When I was younger, I often couldn't tell the difference between spirits and people on the earth. In other cases, the spirits appeared almost like projections or holographic images (looking like Obi Wan Kenobi as he appeared in his message to Luke). And in one particular situation, a bishop, complete with a miter appeared from a white smoky like substance in my development circle. His body was created from the waist up as though he were sitting. He chose to appear in an actual antique bishop's chair that was pushed into the corner of the room. Fortunately, I wasn't the only one who saw him appear!
